Kulhad Wali Chai Masala

90 g · Hand-pounded · Farm-grown tej patta

The reason a roadside kulhad chai tastes like that is the masala, not the cup. Ours is built around tej patta grown on our own farm, hand-pounded with cardamom, cinnamon, clove, pepper and ginger. Half a teaspoon, and you stop paying ₹100 for the experience.

The story

A good kulhad chai is mostly aroma. The clay helps, but what actually fills the kitchen is the masala hitting hot milk — and that is the part you can have at home for a few rupees a cup.

Tej patta is the backbone of this blend, and ours comes off our own farm rather than a wholesaler's sack. It is what gives the cup that rounded, slightly sweet aroma underneath the pepper and ginger heat.

Everything is hand-pounded rather than machine-milled, which leaves the pieces slightly uneven. That is deliberate: a coarser grind releases its aroma over the whole simmer instead of all at once in the first ten seconds.

One pack, many comforting cups.

What goes in

7 botanicals, every one of them named. Nothing hides behind "fragrance".

  • Tej Patta (our farm)
  • Green Cardamom
  • Cinnamon
  • Clove
  • Black Pepper
  • Dry Ginger
  • Selected Indian Spices
  • Farm-grown ingredients

Grown on our own land in Heul Valley, Uttarakhand.

  • Small batches

Made a few dozen at a time, never mass-produced.

  • No harmful chemicals

No parabens, sulphates or synthetic fragrance. Ever.

  • Pan-India shipping

Plastic-free packaging, dispatched from the hills.

The ritual

  1. Add it to the simmer

Half to one teaspoon as the chai comes to a simmer, not at the end. The spices need heat and time.

  2. Let it go a minute

Give it sixty seconds of proper simmering before the milk takes over.

  3. Adjust to taste

Start at half a teaspoon. You can always add more; you cannot take pepper back out.

  4. Close it tight

Keep the jar shut and dry, away from the stove's steam, and the aroma will hold.

Questions

What exactly am I getting?

This one is 90 g, 12 months from the day it is made, and it is milk chai, every single morning. Every batch is prepared by hand in Heul Valley.

Is it really made from farm-grown ingredients?

Yes. The herbs, turmeric and milk come from our own farms and neighbouring households in Heul Valley. We buy nothing from commodity wholesalers, which is also why our batches are small and occasionally sell out.

Will it suit sensitive skin?

There is no synthetic fragrance, no sulphate and no paraben in anything we make, which is what usually causes trouble. That said, botanicals are still active ingredients, so patch-test on your inner arm and wait a day before you use anything new on your face.

Why does the colour or smell vary between orders?

Because the harvest varies. Turmeric grown in a wetter year is a deeper ochre, and the honey changes with whatever is flowering. We do not correct any of it with dye or fragrance, so a little variation between batches is the honest result.

How long does delivery take?

Orders leave our workshop within two working days. Metros usually receive in three to five days, the rest of India in five to eight. Everything ships plastic-free, so nothing arrives wrapped in what we spent years keeping out of our products.

Can I return it?

Unopened items can come back within fourteen days for a full refund. If something arrives damaged or turns out faulty, write to us with a photograph and we will replace it, opened or not.
